Queen Latifah Speaks Out on Obesity Stigma, Heart Health, and Upcoming Biopic

May 16, 2025 | United States — Award-winning entertainer Queen Latifah is using her voice to advocate for health awareness and challenge long-standing stigmas around obesity. In recent interviews, including with USA Today and TODAY, the iconic artist and actress discussed the personal impact of chronic illness, her late mother’s health struggles, and why it’s time to change the narrative around weight and wellness.

Latifah, born Dana Owens, has emerged as a strong advocate for reframing how obesity is discussed in public and medical spaces. She emphasized that obesity is a complex health issue—not a simple matter of willpower.

“There’s this idea that people living with obesity just need to try harder,” Latifah stated. “That’s simply not the truth. It’s a medical condition that deserves serious attention and compassion.”

The entertainer also highlighted disparities in how communities of color experience healthcare. Many, she said, face delayed diagnoses, a lack of culturally competent providers, and shame-based approaches that deter them from seeking treatment.

Personal Loss Fuels Public Advocacy

Latifah’s commitment to health advocacy is deeply personal. Her mother, Rita Owens, passed away in 2018 after living with heart failure. That experience, she says, exposed her to the challenges patients and families face in navigating chronic illness.

“I saw firsthand what it’s like to manage a serious health condition day by day,” she shared. “That pain stays with you—and it’s why I keep speaking out.”

She has since supported campaigns that promote education around heart health, early screenings, and obesity as a medical issue, not a moral one.

Upcoming Biopic and Coachella Appearance

In addition to her advocacy work, Queen Latifah is preparing for a return to the spotlight. She recently confirmed that a biopic about her life and career is in development. The film will trace her journey from her early days as a rapper in Newark to her current status as an award-winning actress and producer.

The multi-hyphenate star also surprised fans with a live performance at Coachella 2025, marking one of her most high-profile musical appearances in recent years.

A Broader Mission

With a legacy that spans three decades in entertainment, Queen Latifah is now focused on breaking barriers in healthcare conversations as well.

“We need to shift how we talk about health and body image—especially for women of color,” she said. “Everyone deserves dignity, support, and proper care, no matter their size.” Her message comes at a critical time, as health advocates across the U.S. continue to push for better access, reduced stigma, and inclusive healthcare solutions.
